IPTV Glossary

Master the technical terminology of the IPTV world.

M3U / M3U8

M3U (Moving Picture Experts Group Audio Layer 3 Uniform Resource Locator) is a computer file format for a multimedia playlist. It is the most common format used by IPTV providers to deliver a list of stream URLs.

Xtream Codes API

A set of protocols used by many IPTV panels. It allows players like IPFlix Pro to log in with a username, password, and server URL, providing better performance and metadata handling than standard M3U links.

EPG (Electronic Program Guide)

An on-screen menu that provides users of television, radio and other media applications with continuously updated menus displaying scheduling information for current and upcoming programming.

ExoPlayer

An open-source media player for Android developed by Google. It is the core playback engine used by IPFlix Pro for its high performance, reliability, and support for modern video codecs.

VOD (Video on Demand)

A system that allows users to select and watch/listen to video or audio content when they choose to, rather than having to watch at a specific broadcast time.

APK (Android Package Kit)

The file format used by the Android operating system for the distribution and installation of mobile apps and middleware. IPFlix Pro is distributed as an APK for direct installation on Android TV and Firestick.

Catch-up TV

A feature that allows users to watch TV programs that were broadcast in the past, typically within the last few days, without having to record them manually.

Sideloading

The process of installing an application on a device without using an official app store (like Google Play). This is commonly used to install IPFlix Pro on Fire TV devices using the Downloader app.

Timeshift

A feature that allows viewers to pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV broadcasts. This enables watching content on your own schedule rather than at the scheduled broadcast time.

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming)

An adaptive bitrate streaming protocol developed by Apple. It breaks video into small HTTP-based file segments and adjusts quality based on network conditions, ensuring smooth playback.

HDR (High Dynamic Range)

A display technology that provides a wider range of colors and greater contrast between light and dark areas. HDR10 and Dolby Vision are common formats supported by modern Android TV devices.

Multi-Profile

A feature allowing multiple users on the same device to maintain separate favorites, watch history, and settings. IPFlix Pro supports up to 6 profiles with optional PIN protection.

D-pad Navigation

The directional pad on a TV remote (up, down, left, right, select). Apps designed for Android TV must support full D-pad navigation since there is no touchscreen or mouse.

FFmpeg

A powerful open-source multimedia framework used for decoding, encoding, and streaming audio and video. IPFlix Pro uses FFmpeg alongside ExoPlayer for broad codec compatibility.

QR Code Setup

A setup method where users scan a QR code on their TV screen with a mobile phone to enter playlist credentials, avoiding the tedious process of typing long URLs with a TV remote.
